These are the terms you agree to when you use MathedUp, and the terms a school or a teacher buys under. They are written to be read, not to be survived. If any part of this is unclear, email us and we will explain it — and if the explanation is better than the wording, we will change the wording.
The short version
This summary is here to save you time. It is not a substitute for the sections below, which are what actually applies.
- Everything a student needs to learn and revise on MathedUp is free, and stays free.
- A subscription is for teachers and schools. It covers every course, including ones we have not built yet.
- A department licence covers one school: every maths teacher in it, and the students they teach. There is no seat count to police.
- You can print our materials, adapt them, and use them with your own students. You cannot publish them, sell them, or pass them to another school.
- Our papers are our own work, written to mirror the format of real exams. We are not connected to any exam board.
- If it does not save you time in your first half term of teaching with it, we refund you in full. See our refund policy.
Who we are
MathedUp is operated by Mathedup Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales, company number 17044969, registered office 124-128 City Road, London, England, EC1V 2NX. In these terms, “we”, “us” and “our” mean Mathedup Ltd, and “you” means the person or organisation using the service.
You can contact us at hello@mathedup.co.uk. MathedUp is run by one person, so that address reaches the person who writes the software and the maths.
These terms
They apply whenever you use mathedup.co.uk, whether or not you pay us anything. By creating an account or subscribing, you accept them. If you are agreeing on behalf of a school, you confirm you are authorised to commit that school.
Two other documents sit alongside these terms and form part of your agreement with us: our privacy policy, and our refund policy.
Accounts
You need an account to save progress, to join a class, or to use a subscription. When you create one:
- Give us information that is accurate, and keep your password to yourself. An account is for one person.
- Students in Year 9 and above can register themselves. A student under 13 must have an account created and managed by a parent or guardian.
- Tell us if you think someone else is using your account.
- You can delete your account, and everything in it, from your account settings at any time.
We may suspend or close an account that is being used to break these terms, to redistribute our materials, or in a way that puts other users at risk. Where we reasonably can, we will tell you why first and give you a chance to put it right.
Free for students
Everything a student needs to learn and revise on MathedUp — topic content, quizzes, practice papers, progress tracking, games and 11+ practice — is free, and we commit to keeping it free. It is not an introductory offer and there is no student tier to upgrade to. Where a school subscribes, its students get more than the free service, never less.
Live events and 1-to-1 tutoring are separate services that have always been paid for separately, and this commitment does not cover them.
Subscriptions
We offer two paid subscriptions, both aimed at the people who plan the lessons:
- MathedUp Pro — one teacher or tutor.
- MathedUp for Schools — one school’s maths department.
What it covers. Everything published for subscribers at the time, plus everything we add while your subscription is active, across every course. There are no per-course add-ons and no upgrade tiers.
Price. You pay the price shown at the time you subscribe. Mathedup Ltd is not registered for VAT, so no VAT is added to anything we charge. We may change our list prices, but a change never affects a period you have already paid for, and we will tell you before any renewal at a new price.
Term and renewal. A subscription runs for twelve months. MathedUp Pro renews automatically at the end of each twelve months unless you cancel, and we will email you before it renews. MathedUp for Schools does not charge automatically — renewal is a new invoice that your school chooses to accept.
Paying by invoice. Schools can pay by invoice, and for departments that is the default: give us your purchase-order number and the address of your finance office, and we will invoice on 30-day terms. Tell us what your school needs on the paperwork and we will put it there.
Founding places. A limited number of founding places are offered at a founding price, at the price and number shown on our pricing page when you subscribe. That price is locked for as long as the subscription stays continuously active — not for a fixed number of years. If a founding subscription lapses and is later restarted, it restarts at whatever the list price is then.
Cancelling. You can cancel at any time, which stops the next renewal. Cancelling part-way through a period you have paid for does not by itself entitle you to money back; when it does, and how the guarantee works, is set out in the refund policy.
What a department licence covers
One school. Every maths teacher employed at that school, and the students taught there. There is no per-seat count to police and no list of named teachers to maintain.
A school here means a single institution with its own DfE Unique Reference Number. If you are a multi-academy trust with several schools, that is a conversation rather than a checkout — email us.
Because the licence is claimed by teachers declaring their school rather than by us issuing seats, we may contact the head of department who bought it to confirm who has claimed it. That is a check on the school’s own list, not a restriction on the number of teachers.
Students at a subscribing school
While a school subscription is active, students in classes taught by that school’s teachers get access to the subscriber materials published at the time. This is part of what the school is buying.
When the subscription ends, that additional access ends with it. The student’s own account, their progress, their RAG self-evaluations and everything in the free service are unaffected — those belong to the student, not to the school.
What you may do with the materials
While your subscription is active, you may:
- Download, save and print anything published for subscribers.
- Use it with the students you teach, in class, for homework, for cover and for intervention.
- Put it on your school’s own learning platform or shared drive, where it is reachable only by people at your school.
- Adapt it, cut it about, and mix it with your own material for your own teaching.
- Share it with the other teachers covered by your licence.
When a subscription ends you stop being able to download or generate new material. We are not going to ask you to shred what you have already printed, and you can finish the school year with what is already in your files — but the permissions above end, so you must stop distributing it further.
What you may not do with the materials
- Publish them anywhere reachable without a login, including a public website, a blog or social media.
- Upload them to a resource-sharing site, whether or not you charge for them.
- Sell them, sub-licence them, or include them in a product or service you charge for.
- Share them with teachers outside your licence, including colleagues at other schools and other schools in your trust.
- Remove or obscure the MathedUp name or attribution.
- Use them as training data for a machine-learning or AI system.
- Use automated tools to bulk-download the site, or work around the access controls on paid areas.
Everything we publish stays ours. A subscription is permission to use it, not a transfer of ownership.
We are independent of the awarding bodies
MathedUp is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or produced by AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR, or any other awarding body.
Our exam-style materials are original works, written to mirror the format, structure and demand of past exam papers. They are not past papers, they are not leaked papers, and they are not predictions of what will be on a future paper. Where we name an awarding body, a specification or a qualification, we do so only to describe which specification the content matches. Those names belong to their owners.
Accuracy, and what we do not promise
We check our material carefully and we test it automatically, but with this much generated content some of it will be wrong somewhere. If you find an error, tell us and we will fix it, quickly — often the same week.
Nothing on MathedUp guarantees an exam result. Our materials are there to support teaching and revision; how a student does in an exam depends on far more than the resources their teacher used.
Availability and changes to the service
We aim to keep MathedUp available and working, and we will use reasonable care and skill to do so. We do not promise it will be uninterrupted or error-free: it is run by one person on shared hosting, and there will be maintenance, outages and the occasional bad afternoon.
We will add to and change the service over time, and sometimes we will retire something. If we permanently withdraw something significant that you are paying for and cannot offer you an equivalent, you can cancel and we will refund the unused part of your subscription.
Your data
How we handle personal data is set out in our privacy policy. In short: a student or parent signs up to us directly and we are the data controller; we ask for a first name and last initial only; and a student is identified publicly only by a gamer tag they choose.
We do not currently accept pupil rosters uploaded by a school. If we ever do, the school becomes the data controller and we become its processor, and that requires a written data processing agreement signed before any pupil data changes hands. Until such an agreement exists, please do not send us lists of pupils.
Ending a subscription
You can cancel at any time. We may end a subscription immediately if you seriously break these terms — in practice, that means redistributing our materials outside your licence. If we end a subscription for that reason, we do not refund it. If we end it for any other reason, we refund the unused part.
Our responsibility to you
Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot be limited by law. Nothing in them affects a consumer’s statutory rights.
If you are an individual buying for yourself, we are responsible for loss you suffer that is a foreseeable result of our breaking this contract or failing to use reasonable care and skill. We are not responsible for loss that was not foreseeable. A self-employed tutor buying MathedUp Pro is buying for their business, and the paragraph below applies to them instead.
If you are a school, trust or other organisation, we are not liable for loss of profit, loss of business, loss of data, or any indirect or consequential loss, and our total liability for all claims connected with your subscription is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim arose.
If you think we have used something we should not have
If you own material and believe something we publish infringes your rights, email mo@mathedup.co.uk with enough detail to find it. We will look at it promptly, and where we agree we will take it down first and discuss it afterwards. We would rather be told than found.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as the service grows, and the date at the top always shows the current version. If we make a change that materially reduces what you are paying for, we will tell subscribers by email, and you may cancel and take a pro-rata refund of the rest of your period.
Law, and how to complain
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer living in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring proceedings in your own country.
If something has gone wrong, email mo@mathedup.co.uk. It reaches the person who can fix it, and we would rather have the complaint than the silence.
